YELLOW FACE at Theatre Raleigh (directed by Telly Leung)

Telly Leung directs David Henry Hwang’s YELLOW FACE at Theatre Raleigh

June 22 – July 3, 2022

Yellow Face explores the lines between truth and fiction; they blur with hilarious and moving results in David Henry Hwang’s unreliable memoir. Asian-American playwright DHH, fresh off his Tony Award win for M. Butterfly, leads a protest against the casting of Jonathan Pryce as the Eurasian pimp in the original Broadway production of Miss Saigon, condemning the practice as “yellowface.” His position soon comes back to haunt him when he mistakes a Caucasian actor, Marcus G. Dahlman, for mixed-race, and casts him in the lead Asian role of his own Broadway-bound comedy, Face Value. When DHH discovers the truth of Marcus’ ethnicity, he tries to conceal his blunder to protect his reputation as an Asian-American role model by passing the actor off as a “Siberian Jew.”

THE NICE LIST (2020) Premieres
Dec

to Jan 10

THE NICE LIST (2020) Premieres

On December 1st, 2020 - our National Day of Giving - we all come together for one common purpose: to celebrate kindness, generosity and the spirit of giving back.

In that spirit The Nice List will be brought to you for FREE on YouTube during the month of December for your family holiday enjoyment.

This special glimpse into the North Pole has been made possible by Masie Productions in partnership with Starhawk Productions who have assembled a diverse cast from Broadway and Television to tell an original heartwarming Christmas tale with Santa’s magical workshop like we have never-seen-before.

The Nice List aims to “celebrate the power of the human spirit as we come together for the happiest time of the year” says Wendy Gillespie. Elliott Masie draws the comparison that “the Elves in our story are just like the millions of employees and families right now that are navigating the world working remotely, communicating in new ways and discovering that the power of empathy and laughter through music can bring us comfort in these challenging times.”

SYNOPSIS

Santa's Head Elf, Chestnut (Telly Leung, Aladdin), has convinced the whole North Pole to adopt modern technology and go virtual. That means all the planning, the toys, the mayhem—it's all happening online. And we get to watch!

At the beginning of the Christmas Season, all the elves are all feeling confident in their roles—including our mismatched protagonists: upbeat Crumpet (Julia Mattison, Godspell) and grumpy Raisin (Ann Harada, Avenue Q).

But when Santa (James Monroe Iglehart, Tony Award winner for Genie in Aladdin) announces that he'll be supervising the season remotely this year, Raisin and Crumpet must take on the biggest responsibility of all: the famous "Naughty and Nice List".

As the seasonal pressure mounts, Chestnut's innovative plans start to fall apart. Workshop elves Cookie (Jennifer Barnhart, Avenue Q), Fruitcake (Nick Kohn, Avenue Q) and Gumdrop (Don Darryl Rivera, Aladdin) are running dangerously low on Christmas spirit. Even worse, overworked Crumpet takes a turn for the militant and starts putting kids on the Naughty List for minor infractions. Pretty soon, it looks like no one will be getting any presents at all. Can Raisin convince everyone that no one is all naughty or all nice?

Luckily, Santa appears just in time to spread some holiday cheer and remind us all that Christmas is about bringing people together—no matter who or where we are.
